In the restoration industry, your team is your greatest asset. The success of your business hinges on their skills, passion, and dedication. But finding the right talent for your business can be easier said than done. One Claim Solution talked with Eric Sprague and Larry Wilburton from Super Tech University, a company helping train home service industry workers around the globe, to get their insight on how to find the right talent for your restoration business. Here is some of their advice. To learn more about finding the right talent, reach out to Super Tech U.
Finding high-quality new employees can be challenging, but it’s not hopeless. Eric and Larry shared that research shows the best way contractors can find good new employees is through building a positive company culture and then getting employee referrals. “If you create a good culture, you’ll get employees from the existing employees you have,” Eric said. When people are happy at their jobs, they are more likely to want to tell a friend or family member about a job opportunity at their workplace. Current employees are also great resources for finding new employees because they know what it takes to succeed at their workplace and can predict if a friend will be a good fit.
One of the most common mistakes Super Tech University sees contractors make when they’re hiring is hiring reactively. When a lot of jobs come in at once, contractors feel pressure to quickly beef up their workforce. “They need bodies,” Larry said, “And then the bar gets lowered,” and contractors hire candidates they never would otherwise.
Hiring the wrong people when you’re under pressure can lead to a lot of unnecessary drama and pain. “It’s not worth getting that one next job done,” Eric cautioned.
Instead of hiring reactively, view hiring as more of a long game. Create and stick to a hiring plan that involves things like multiple interviews and careful consideration of whether or not a candidate is a good fit for your business.
In situations where you have an influx of jobs and need a lot of people quickly, Larry recommends looking to temp services. Develop a relationship with one or two services that can send you decent people when you need help. You may even discover people who are a good fit for a permanent position on your team through their temp work with you.
A big piece of finding the right talent for your restoration business is looking for candidates with the right traits. Those traits might vary based on the role you are hiring for or your company culture. Eric emphasized how important coachability and the ability to fit into a system is for new employees. When Eric was recruiting for his and Larry’s restoration business, he found himself frequently hiring athletes. “[Athletes are] used to being coached on a consistent basis. Obviously, not everybody in our organization had to be an athlete, but if I could find an athlete, that person usually could get plugged into our system a little quicker and easier than somebody who didn’t have that background,” Eric said.
